The cross and the lynching tree are the most emotionally charged symbols in African American history. Basically, the cross represented the worst in human beings, while the lynching tree symbolized white power and the death of the blacks. Hendricks argued that American citizens apply faith to politics as they choose, but those who govern them should note the importance of rationality.
