Voice Onset Time is the time that elapses between when the articulators for a stop are released and the onset of a vocal cord vibration of the following segment (Rothenberg, 2009). The period is always measured in milliseconds. VOT is said to be a vital characteristic of stop consonants since it plays a large role in the discrimination of languages across the world. This paper aims at providing a precise description of the various factors that influence VOT.
