Internal combustion engines are the primary source of power in automobiles which have been in use and will still be in use in the foreseeable future. These engines are inefficient and produce a lot of emissions; this was not a problem initially until the effects of hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxides on the environment and health of people were evident.
