From the American Revolution to Operation Iraqi Freedom, African-Americans have always been part of the U.S. Armed Forces. There has been no America-engaged war in which black servicemen did not participate (Stillman 1). However, until the late 1940’s, colored soldiers were forced to fight in segregated units, often facing discrimination and prejudice.
