The Escherichia coli (E. coli) Nissle is a gram-negative, [G1] facultatively anaerobic motile rod and one of the most studied probiotic strains. The E. coli Nissle strain (sold as a probiotic food supplement in some European countries) was isolated early in 1917 and suspected to have protective effects against infectious gastroenteritis (Adediran et al., 2014).
