Like a roof of a building, a green roof is a roof that is partially or completely covered with the plantation of live vegetation, whereby the vegetation has the ability to grow on the roof through means of a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane. Various systems can be implemented into the green roof such as a root barriers, water retention, drainage and irrigation systems. Root barriers prevent the unwanted spread of roots, which may potentially damage the roofs foundation of a building.
