In the Second Treatise on Civil Government John Locke argued for the right to private property based on the understanding that appropriation was just if there “was enough and as good left in common for others.” Robert Nozick thought Locke was both unclear in his argument and did not go far enough in the favor of private property rights, and so offered additional arguments in favor of the proviso.
