In September 2015, a study by the Institute for Criminal Policy Research found out that over 700, 000 girls and women were in prisons around the world (World Prison Brief, 2015). In comparison to the male prison population, the report indicated that the number of girls and women in the criminal justice system had increased by 50 percent over a period of 15 years. According to the Institute for Criminal Policy Research, the United States of America had the highest number of female inmates followed by China with 205, 400 and 103, 766 respectively (World Prison Brief, 2015).
